Bergamot Essential Oil- Citrus aurantium subsps. bergamia
This Bergamot essential oil is therapeutic quality and is sourced from Italy. The “FCF” stands for “furocoumarin free” and indicates that the phototoxic components, known as furocoumarins, have been removed. Phototoxicity refers to the effect of the essential oil on the skin that makes the skin sensitive to sunlight, which can cause you to experience severe sunburn if you are exposed to sunlight for too long after applying it to the skin. This makes it one of the few essential oils which are slightly altered prior to use in aromatherapy. However, it’s use would be limited in massage therapy without removing the furocoumarins.
Bergamot essential oil has a beautifully fresh, light, fruity aroma with wonderful citrus notes and blends well with many floral, herbal and citrus essential oils and with Juniper essential oil. Bergamot FCF essential oil for use in aromatherapy is produced by cold expression of the fruit’s rind after it has been allowed to ripen and dry.
Bergamot essential oil has refreshing, relaxing and uplifting effects when used for aromatherapy. It is said that Bergamot essential oil has been used for depression, anxiety, nervous indigestion, and urinary tract infections.
Old or oxidized oils should be avoided.
May cause skin sensitization.
Not hazardous in pregnancy.
Due to the removal of furocoumarins, Bergamot FCF is not considered phototoxic.
