Natural Granite Cleaner
This video shows you how to quickly and easily make a safe and effective natural granite cleaner.
Your granite countertops
But did you know that you may be damaging your granite or the sealer if you are using typical household cleaners on them?
Typical household cleaners contain chemicals that may strip away the sealer on your granite. That can leave the natural stone vulnerable to moisture and stains. Using them over time can ruin your expensive countertops.
Another thing to avoid when cleaning your granite is vinegar or lemon juice. Vinegar contains up to 5% acetic acid, and acids can remove the sealer on the granite, and even etch the stone.
The same is true for using lemon juice. Lemon juice contains citric acid which can also strip the sealer and etch the stone.
Well then, how do you clean your granite without eating away at the precious sealer while still disinfecting your counter top? By using this easy and all natural granite cleaner.
Making The Natural Granite Cleaner
Making this natural granite cleaner is easy. All you need is:
- 1 1/2 Cups Water
- 1/2 Cup Rubbing Alcohol
- 5 drops Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
- Essential Oils (Optional but highly recommended to offset the alcohol scent)
One thing to note is that we don’t use Castile soap with this cleaner because when mixed with the alcohol it can leave streaks.
Another thing to note is that I use a combination of citrus essential oils to offset the smell of the alcohol and leave a fresh, clean citrus scent.
Now I can already hear the question popping up in your heads. “But you said not to use lemon juice to clean granite”. I have done extensive reading on the subject and citrus essential oils don’t contain citric acid like lemon juice does. ( Source- Tisserand & Young, Essential Oil Safety 2nd Edition, Churchill Livingstone- November 6, 2013)
Since all the essential oils used are extracted from the rind of the fruit and do not contain the juice, they do not contain citric acid found in the juice as any of the constituents found in the oil.
