Copaiba Oil Health Benefits
Copaiba Oil Health Benefits
The main chemical compound in Copaiba oil is the terpene Beta-Caryophyllene. Beta-Caryophyllene is also what produces Copaiba oil health benefits.
What is Beta-Caryophyllene
Beta-Caryophyllene is the chemical compound that makes up as much as 60% of the chemical compounds present in Copaiba essential oil. It is also present in many other essential oils in varying amounts. This chemical is what gives these essential oils their spicy or woodsy scents.
It can be found in the essential oils of Black Pepper, Clove, Basil, Cinnamon, Rosemary and Lavender. It is also found in Cannabis, although in lower amounts.
Your body contains 2 types of cannabinoid receptors, which are labeled CB receptors for short. CB1 receptors are what THC in Cannabis binds to that produces that high feeling. CB2 receptors are found throughout the body and are related to the inflammatory immune response. Recent research has also found CB2 receptors may affect some nerve signals.
Beta-Caryophyllene binds directly with CB2 receptors and so can be effective for relief of pain caused by inflammation as well as nerve pain such as in diabetes, the so called diabetic nerve pain.
How Does It Compare To CBD Oil?
CBD oil is all the rage these days. It continues to be studied as a possible agent to relieve pain and inflammation in the body.
The active cannabinoid in CBD oil has a concentration of from 5-30% depending on whether the CBD oil is derived from hemp or from marijuana. Most CBD oil currently on the market is in the low range due to the fact that it is extracted from hemp.
Copiaba essential oil, on the other hand, has as high as 60% of the terpene Beta-Caryophyllene. Since Beta-Caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors in the body it is also considered a cannabinoid. Since it binds to the CB2 receptor it can also has the same effects as CBD. With the much higher concentration of the active ingredient there is a possibility that it could be more effective.
As a matter of fact my research shows that some legal marijuana growers are working to breed into their strains a higher Beta-Caryophyllene content.
What Are The Copiaba Oil Health Benefits?
May Relieve Chronic Pain- A study published in 2014 (1) showed that “beta-caryophyllene exerts analgesic effects in mouse models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain”. The study further stated “the natural plant product BCP (Beta-Caryophyllene) may be highly effective in the treatment of long-lasting, debilitating pain states.
The study also found that with prolonged use
Another study published in 2013 (7) found that Beta-Caryophyllene may release the same endorphins as the opioid morphine when it binds to CB2 receptors.
This could have major implications for those who choose to use Copaiba oil for pain relief. It was also found that it is one of the few essential oils that can be safe to take as a dietary supplement by mouth. It has been found to have a low toxicity. The US Food And Drug Administration has it listed in their list of safe food additives. (6)
Has Anti-Inflammatory Properties– Many conditions that have associated pain are caused by inflammation. For instance, arthritis pain is caused by inflammation in the joints. Many other health issues are inflammation related as well. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is caused by inflammation of the inner wall of the colon.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Copaiba essential oil is another incredible health benefit of the oil. A study published in 2018 (2) found that
“β-caryophyllene improves the systemic inflammation and oxidative status of arthritic rats and, in addition, it was not associated with hepatotoxicity”. Hepatotoxicity means toxic to the liver. This suggests it can also be a protective substance for the liver as well as reducing inflammation in the body.
May Help Prevent Cancer– A review of the scientific literature published in 2016 (3) found that Beta-Caryophyllene has shown anticancer effects in laboratory studies. It further found that it may be helpful as an additional therapy to chemotherapy for those battling cancer.
The review also found that the analgesic pain relieving effects of Beta-Caryophyllene may be helpful to relieve pain for those battling cancer.
Possesses Antimicrobial Properties- The antimicrobial properties of Beta-Caryophyllene have also been studied. A study published in 2016 showed it was effective at combating dental plaques in dogs. (4) Since it has a low possibility of toxicity it is included in many recipes found online for natural toothpastes due to its antimicrobial properties.
It is also found as an ingredient in many natural deodorant recipes for the same reason. Sweat doesn’t naturally have an odor. It is bacterial action of the skin flora that causes odor. By killing the bacteria that causes the odor it makes an effective ingredient in those natural deodorant recipes.
Copaiba resin has been used for centuries by the people living in the Amazon rain forest to treat wounds and many other ailments.
May Help Prevent Osteoporosis– A laboratory study published in 2016 (5) found that “β-caryophyllene promotes osteoblastic mineralization, and reduces adipogenesis and osteoclastogenesis in mouse bone marrow cell cultures in vitro”. In the study of the cells from mice bone
May Be Found To Extend Lifespan– A study published in 2014 (8) found that worms treated with Beta-Caryophyllene had their lifespan extended by 22%. Now I know this is just a study on worms, but if there is the possibility this effect could translate to humans wouldn’t it be worth a try?
Although some of the health benefits of Beta-Caryophyllene have only been studied in laboratory studies and animal models, the results are encouraging. Other studies, on the other hand, have shown that clinically significant pain relief has been shown when it was studied.
An additional benefit if Copaiba essential oil is that it is not produced from Cannabis, so there is no danger of any level of THC in Copaiba oil. I have nothing against the use of Cannabis. However, there are still jobs in the US where drug testing is a real possibility. Depending on the level of THC testing, it may be possible to show up THC positive on a test by using CBD oil. While unlikely, there is zero possibility of having to deal with that possibility if you were to decide to use Copaiba oil.
One last benefit of Copaiba essential oil is price. CBD oil prices on one site I checked range from $50/oz for the 300mg strength to $99.99 for the 1000mg strength.
The price for 1oz Copaiba essential oil on our web site is $19.00. The 4oz size we sell is $59.00. Copaiba essential oil does not come in different strengths. But looking at the lowest strength of CBD oil you can get 4 times the amount of Copaiba essential oil for only $9.00 more than 1oz of CBD oil.
