I wanted to write a series of articles to better help you understand the uses and benefits of each oil. In this way you can make a more informed decision about which oil you should purchase for your intended use.

I decided to look at avocado oil benefits for the first article in this series. Avocado oil has many health benefits for your skin, and also can be used in cooking to help you get essential fatty acids in your diet.
Avocado oil is not, as some people refer to it, an essential oil. Essential oils are volatile substances that are obtained from plant parts and contain many different chemical constituents. Avocado oil is a carrier oil. It is obtained from cold pressing the fruit pulp of the avocado to obtain the oil. It takes approximately 5 pounds of avocado fruit pulp to make 250ml of avocado oil
I will explain avocado oil benefits and also link to some studies which have been done to prove those benefits where they are available.
Avocado Oil Benefits For Your Skin
Avocado oil has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that make it very beneficial for your skin. It can help to calm and heal dry or itchy skin. It can help to moisturize and hydrate the skin. It can also help to heal wounds faster.
A study done in 2013 found that “avocado oil is a rich source of oleic acid and contains essential fatty acids”. The authors wrote, “avocado oil can promote increased collagen synthesis and decreased numbers of inflammatory cells during the wound-healing process and may thus be considered a new option for treating skin wounds”. By adding healing and antibacterial essential oils such as tea tree or lavender the healing properties can be enhanced.
A study published in 2001 found that a vitamin B12 cream with avocado oil added was effective in treating plaque psoriasis.

You can use avocado oil in DIY homemade skin treatments. There are numerous recipes online for making your own skin care products using avocado oil.
You can use it as it is to smooth, moisturize and heal chapped skin by massaging it into your skin after a bath or shower.
For use in aromatherapy massage it is usually mixed with a lighter oil such as sweet almond or grapeseed in a 10-30% mixture. However, it is readily absorbed into deep tissue and has properties that make it an excellent emollient. This makes it an excellent oil for use with dry or mature skin. It is also useful for skin affected by eczema or psoriasis.
Whether you decide to use it as is, or mix it with another carrier oil, avocado oil is an excellent oil for use in aromatherapy massage. It is also an excellent oil for use in your homemade skin care products and routines.
Avocado Oil Benefits For Heart Health
Avocado oil has an oleic acid content that is comparable to olive oil at around 70%. Oleic acid is a heart healthy omega-9 fatty acid.
A study done in 2008 found that the high oleic acid content was the mechanism responsible for the health benefit of olive oil reducing blood pressure. It then stands to reason that avocado oil would have the same effects due to its also being made up of 70% oleic acid.
In a 2014 study, researchers found that rats that were given avocado oil orally had a reduction in triglycerides and a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol over the control group.
Avocado Oil Benefits For Diabetics
An animal study published in 2017 found that in diabetic rats that were given oral doses of avocado oil blood sugar was reduced and the avocado oil had protective benefits for the kidneys. Kidney damage is a risk of elevated blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Another study published in 2015 showed that avocado oil improved mitochondrial function and decreased oxidative stress in the brains of diabetic rats. Diabetic encephalopathy is another of the risks posed by diabetes.
May Benefit Eye Health
Avocado oil has a relatively high level of lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid that is an antioxidant. It has been linked in studies to eye health and it may prevent the development of macular degeneration and cateracts as we age.
May Improve Arthritis Symptoms
A combination of 1/3 avocado oil and 2/3 soybean oil extracts called ASU (Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables) has been found to help relieve the symptoms of arthritis. This is especially true for knee and hip arthritis symptoms. An observational human study published in 2016 found that ASU gradually reduced pain and improved functional ability in those who used it for 6 months. It also showed a decrease in the
Healthy When Used In The Diet
All of the healthy omega fatty acids and other constituents of avocado oil are available when used in the diet. It can be used in cold applications, such as dressings or dipping oil.
For cooking use it is better to use unrefined avocado oil. The unrefined oil has a high smoke point of at least 400 degrees F. This makes it a good choice for use in place of other oils when used for stir frying or other cooking choices using relatively high heat.
Once an oil reaches its smoke point it begins to break down and the constituents contained in the oil can begin to break down or even be converted to other not so healthy results due to the heat.
This brings us to the end of the first article on the benefits of carrier oils used in aromatherapy massage. As you can see, there are many other benefits and uses of the oils traditionally used for massage in aromatherapy.
